The 2022 earthquake in Cianjur, West Java, is a 5.6 MW earthquake with a depth of 10 km that occurred in Cianjur Regency, West Java, Indonesia, on November 21, 2022, at 13.21 WIB. This earthquake was felt as far away as Bandung, the capital city of Jakarta, Tangerang, Rangkasbitung, and Lampung. The government of Cianjur Regency, West Java, noted that the number of victims who died as a result of the earthquake increased to 635 people. Total evacuees due to the Cianjur earthquake reached 116,753 people, with infrastructure damage to 56,548 houses, 281 places of worship, 701 educational facilities, and 18 health facilities that were badly damaged and could hardly function anymore. It is estimated that the loss due to the disaster reached more than USD250 million.

Ramadan is usually anticipated with happiness, but unfortunately this time it's hard. The people of Cianjur even have to survive in uncertain conditions, seeing the many aftershocks that still occur and claim victims. In the month of Ramadan, survivors of the Cianjur earthquake must face the fear of aftershocks that cannot be predicted. BMKG data states that as of January 24, 2023, there have been around 482 aftershocks since November 21, 2022. People are still panicking about the aftershocks for the next few months.

The last M4.3 aftershock rocked Cianjur on Tuesday, January 24. Two residents were seriously injured, and five were injured as a result of being hit by a collapsed ceiling and falling tiles. The earthquake shocks had panicked some residents in Cianjur and Sukabumi Regencies. "The vibrations were quite felt; me and other residents ran out of the house," said Supriatin (38). The earthquake shock felt by residents was quite large and lasted quite a long time. When the aftershock occurred, residents were sleeping and were awakened by the earthquake. "The earthquake was quite strong and woke some residents who were sleeping," said Citamiang resident, Novi (25), of Sukabumi City.

Who would have thought that this year's Ramadan must be passed without family, a house, and enough food?

For all Muslims around the world, Ramadan is a long-awaited month. In Indonesia, the arrival of the month of Ramadan will be greeted with festive preparations in every family. Starting from preparing enough food for suhoor and iftar, to organising various festive activities such as ‘takbir keliling’ (on the first night of Ramadan, people surround the city carrying torches and reciting takbir) and i'tikaf at the mosque until the end of Ramadan.

This year, who would have thought, the holy Ramadan would come when the condition of the Cianjur people is desperate. Their homes were destroyed, their families died, and various places were also destroyed. Cianjur earthquake survivors didn't even have a chance to choose their suhoor and iftar menus. Because whatever is there, even a little bit of it, will be a pleasure for them.
